The seminar is kindly hosted by AMICE’s Portuguese members, Mútua dos Pescadores and Sagres.

Mútua dos Pescadores

Mútua dos Pescadores was founded in 1942 to insure all types of professional fishing vessels in Portugal. In the 1950s, cover was extended to personal accident and workers’ compensation in the same sector.

Today, Mútua dos Pescadores has expanded into the area of recreational maritime cover, covering sport fishing and littoral communities for example. With premium income of almost 8 million Euro and 16,000 members, Mútua dos Pescadores is the market leader in the professional fishing sector with more than 50% market share in maritime damage insurance and 80% in workers’ compensation. The company has also built up a 20% share in recreational maritime insurance in barely four years.

Mútua dos Pescadores is proud of its cooperative status and carries out its economic activity in a socially responsible way, maintaining close links to the maritime community.

Companhia de Seguros Sagres

If we consider the insurance sector to be, by its very nature, a key partner of the social economy, then in this context we must give special emphasis to the role of the Sagres Insurance Company (Companhia de Seguros Sagres) in Portugal.

Sagres is an insurer legally incorporated as a joint-stock company (Sociedade Anónima) whose shareholders are entities which are part of, or linked to, the social economy and who share common aims in the coverage of risks of individuals, small and medium-sized companies, entities of the social economy and associated members of these entities.

Founded in 2002, SAGRES offers personal accident, workers’ compensation, property and motor insurance to more than 140,000 individual and commercial clients and had premium income of almost 50 million Euro in 2007.
